Join us on 29th July as we celebrate the first EVER International EAS Day!
International Equine Assisted Services Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the many ways equines contribute to human well-being, learning, rehabilitation, inclusion, sport, and personal growth.
Whether you work in therapy, education, learning, social care, adaptive sport, research, or equine welfare, this day belongs to all who are part of the EAS community.
Why 29th July?
The date was chosen to honour the legacy of Lis Hartel of Denmark.
Lis Hartel became one of the most remarkable figures in equestrian history. After contracting polio and being left with significant physical impairments, she returned to riding and won two Olympic silver medals in dressage in 1952 and 1956.
She was the first woman to win an Olympic dressage medal and one of the first athletes to demonstrate to the world that physical disability does not define a person’s potential. Her achievements inspired generations and contributed to the development and recognition of therapeutic riding and Equine Assisted Services worldwide.
For many in our field, Lis Hartel’s story represents courage, perseverance, partnership with the equine, and belief in possibilities.
Why a Silver Medal Matters
We believe there is something particularly meaningful about Lis Hartel winning silver rather than gold.
Gold is often seen as the final achievement. Silver reminds us that progress is a journey.
Equine Assisted Services are rarely about a single victory. They are about taking the next step, overcoming the next challenge, building confidence, improving participation, and creating opportunities for growth.
Every achievement matters. Every step forward matters.
