We are excited to announce an initiative to compile and publish a list of books authored by professionals in the field of Equine Assisted Services. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase valuable contributions to the community and increase awareness of the field.

This initiative is non-commercial and aims to promote awareness of Equine Assisted Services. However, only books authored by individual HETI members or by organisations that are HETI members will receive additional visibility. This includes promotion on HETI’s social media channels, Newsletter and in the Global Gallop magazine, as well as the option to include a purchase link alongside the book description.

If you are an author but only affiliated with a HETI member organisation (rather than an individual HETI member), this promotional benefit will not apply. We warmly invite you to consider becoming a HETI member to access these opportunities.

Submission Criteria:

  • Relevance: The book should relate directly to Equine Assisted Services.

Equine-Assisted Therapy and Learning with At-Risk Young People

Title: Equine-Assisted Therapy and Learning with At-Risk Young People
Author: Dr Hannah Burgon (PhD, MSc, BSc hons)
Language: English
Description: The health benefits of interaction with horses for people experiencing mental health and other conditions are fast gaining recognition all over the world. This book explores the experiences of ‘at-risk’ young people who participated in a research study, based at a unique therapeutic horsemanship centre in the UK. Therapeutic horseman- ship is aligned with the developing fields of equine-assisted psychotherapy and equine-assisted learning where horses are partnered for social, emotional and learning benefits. The young people who attended the therapeutic horsemanship centre were considered to be ‘at-risk’ because of their various psycho-social disadvantages.
A number of themes emerge throughout the course of the book, including the areas of nurture, attachment and trust, social well-being and resilience, identification with a horse, a ‘safe’ space and calming influence, role of the horse in the therapeutic arena and the natural environment and spiritual dimensions. Additional links to the mind-fulness literature are explored, and they bring an exciting new dimension to the field of equine-assisted therapy and learning. The book includes a Foreword from Leif Hallberg, author of Walking the Way of the Horse.

Title: Walking with wise horses: Equine assisted therapy in developmental age
Author: Annalisa Roscio (Physical Therapist), Michele Panzera (Veterinary Medical Doctor and Full Professor (University of Messina, Italy)
Language: Italian
Description:Horses are exceptionally empathetic, “wise” animals, capable of engaging people in difficulty in an active and enjoyable experience. Individuals with various conditions can benefit significantly from interacting with this animal if guided by experienced professionals. In particular, horse-assisted therapy, being a rehabilitative method with strong motivational impact and proven scientific evidence, should be considered a valid therapy for the developmental age.

This book addresses the subject of equine rehabilitation for children and adolescents, offering a historical overview and providing a concise and comprehensive description of its main aspects: operational methods and tools, the composition of the multidisciplinary team, and animal management. Based on the experience of the Equestrian Rehabilitation Center of the ASST Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda in Milan, which has been working with children and adolescents with disabilities and horse-assisted therapy for over forty years, this volume represents a valuable resource for all professionals in the field.

Horses Heal PTSD: Walking New Paths

Title: Horses Heal PTSD: Walking New Paths
Author: Dr. Anita Shkedi
Language: English
Description: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating trauma, stressor-related disorder that can be challenging to treat. Individuals with PTSD have recurrent, unwanted, intrusive recollections when exposed to internal and external events, resulting in avoidance of people, places, or activities, as well as being in a constant state of hyper-vigilance for danger. These symptoms usually cause significant problems in a person’s life; if they are experienced for over six months, it is considered chronic. They know that to heal, they will need to invest time and effort and may even experience pain in the healing process. Those actions are actually in opposition to the illness itself. In most cases, people with PTSD feel as if they are stuck in an endless loop, living in survival mode with no constructive process that can lead them out of their condition. Many, without motivation and guidance, see no way out.

The medical community of clinical care and public health, as well as researchers and families of patients with PTSD, struggle to find solutions to support people with PTSD. They are aware that current medications and therapeutic interventions are insufficient. To help a person with PTSD heal, a new integrated paradigm is required that takes a holistic approach to the problem. This approach encourages people to become motivated, invest more time in themselves, and address their minds, body, and soul.

Horses Heal PTSD: Walking New Paths will captivate people who want to know more about the human-horse bond, the condition of PTSD, and how to treat it. In particular, this book will appeal to clients with PTSD, the medical community of clinical care and public health, researchers, the veteran community, people studying Equine Assisted Activities and/or Therapy (EAA/T), and horse lovers. Horses Heal PTSD: Walking New Paths expertly addresses the power of the horse to treat and heal this often misunderstood and difficult-to-treat condition. It will deepen the reader’s knowledge of PTSD and demonstrate how partnering with horses is a profoundly effective physical, psychological, and metaphysical therapy that has long-lasting results.

Today, the world is becoming more aware of the realization that horses, with whom we have had a relationship from ancient times, can provide holistic, energetic healing and can address the human mind, body, and soul as an integrated unit, which is known to be more successful than treating any of these levels separately. The horse can reach the core of problems, shifting energetic patterns that keep destructive emotions, physical symptoms, life-depleting habits, and negative thoughts in place. Experiencing the horse can be awesome. For individuals with PTSD who have difficulty in reducing stressors and controlling and even freeing themselves of unwanted thoughts and emotions, the release of new energy is extremely motivating, providing a renewed sense of control, fulfillment, and purpose. In the company of horses, individuals with PTSD can relieve anxieties that are deeply rooted at the emotional and ethereal level, rebuilding mindfulness, spirituality, and inner peace. Bonding with horses becomes a life-altering experience, allowing a person to set goals, pursue life dreams and wishes, and rebuild relationships.

Horses Heal PTSD: Walking New Paths provides a historical account of the transgenerational inheritance relationship and connected, collective unconscious between the horse and a human. In bringing together these two parallel worlds of humans and horses, the author provides readers with a journey in which they will encounter the joy that individuals with PTSD feel when they experience trust in the company of a horse.

Some articles and studies describe the benefits of horseback riding or even groundwork. Still, none explain in detail the history of the human-horse relationship and how and why the horse can heal those who have combat stress or have been traumatized by incest and rape. This book offers a unique approach with practical solutions, evidence-based proof, and diagrams showing different therapeutic approaches to achieve goals from a sensory and cognitive perspective. Actual case studies demonstrate how the horse can break the cycle of helplessness.

Horses Heal PTSD: Walking New Paths is the culmination of Dr. Anita Shkedi’s life’s work in clinical and public healthcare and as an Equine-assisted Activities and Therapy (EAA/T) practitioner, which led her to help people who have experienced trauma face their adversity build resilience, and find joy. After three and a half decades of working as an EAA/T practitioner with many veterans and others with PTSD, the author has had ongoing opportunities to study, teach, write, and spend hours in reflective practice.
