Equine Pathology & Diseases

Overview

This study provides an all-encompassing review of the typical ailments and functional changes that osteopathic practitioners may encounter. Pathology refers to abnormal or undesirable conditions, while pathophysiology explains the functional changes associated with a disease or injury. The course is organized by system and specifically highlights orthopedic conditions and their considerations. The emphasis is on identifying which pathologies can be improved with osteopathic care and which require immediate referral to other healthcare professionals.

Learning outcomes

Learn basic pathological terms.

Understand the stages of inflammation and tissue repair.

Describe and identify symptoms relating to major pathologies of the nervous system.

Describe and identify symptoms relating to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and accessory glands.

Describe and identify symptoms relating to disease of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Describe pathologies of the musculoskeletal system: diseases of the bones, joints and skeletal muscles. Identify symptoms of each disease and be able to distinguish the differences between them.

Describe and identify symptoms relating to pathologies of the integumentary system: equine diseases of the skin and hoof.
